Knight of Air (Swords) / Lozen

The next painting in my series of feminist tarot cards is the Knight of Air (Swords). This card symbolizes assertiveness, courage, daring, intellect, and an ambitious nature that does not bow under pressure or obstacles.

For this card, I have chosen to portray Lozen (1840-1889), who was a Chihenne Chiricahua Apache warrior. Lozen felt called to life as a warrior, despite the traditional gender roles of her people. She was an especially skilled with horses and was said to have an almost supernatural gift for finding enemies. She was highly respected as a warrior and eventually rode and fought alongside Geronimo.
